Anytime someone mentions the Aerospace Museum of California you automatically think of aviation, space exploration, flight simulators and static displays of retired military and commercial aircraft in all shapes and sizes.

Simply put, this is a major league facility located right here on the outskirts of Sacramento. We did spent our fair share of time watching the grandkid "fly" an historic U. Coast Guard Albatross under the watchful eyes of a dedicate docent. Now to Leonardo da Vinci. Yes, I said Leonardo da Vinci and the limited engagement of some of his many mechanical works and innovations now at the Aerospace Museum. I did NOT go to the museum today to see the da Vinci exhibit but rather found it to be the highlight of our trip with the grandkids.

He envisioned an airplane from the flight of a bat. Did I mention this guy is also a pretty decent painter; you may have heard of some of his work such as the Mona Lisa and The Last Supper to mention a couple.

He is world renowned for his many interests in the arts and sciences. Please find time in your busy schedules to experience this intriguing display of da Vinci's finest works. This museum was easy to find, easy to access, and had great exhibits for the aircraft enthusiast. There are several samples of aircraft and rocket engines, some space exploration stuff, and currently an interactive exhibit on the machines of DaVinci.

I particularly enjoyed the aircraft on display outside, several military and civilian aircraft can be climbed on and in. Great place to spend some time, th staff are very knowledgeable and friendly. We had a hard time locating this place, but boy was it worth the effort!

The Da Vinci machines exhibit was hands on and exciting to see! My 14 year old spent several hours working pulleys, cogs and wheels, checking out the tank, flying contraptions. Oh it was just wonderful! We saw space suites, learned about all kinds of air craft and even went inside a FED Ex plane, touched and climbed to our hearts content! So glad we came! Cuuently there is a limited time DaVinci exhibit, which is totally awesome.

Wonderful docent who talked and walked with us. Ventured out side to see the FedEx plane and Walt came and gave us two ladies a fantastic tour. Both docents talked in a manner of which we could understand- not overly technical or beneath us. It's the Wandering Yank here. I love airplane museums, and I was last here 10 years ago at their old location. It's a very large and spacious room. There are a number of small aircraft and missiles hanging from the ceiling.

A beautifully restored F Sabre was the highlight for me. There are exhibits on space travel and astronauts, a number of aircraft powerplants, and for some reason a couple of WW2-era jeeps. There are also some "rides" for extra charge, which I didn't try out.

But to be honest, there wasn't much to grab my interest. But outdoors, there's lots to see. And there are quite a few others, even a retired Fed Ex Boeing There were a number of volunteers walking around, eager to answer questions. There's a nice picnic area next door. All in all, I think it's a decent museum. If airplanes are your interest, I think you'll enjoy it.

If not, it might pique some interest in aviation and space technology. All are very interesting as well. Flights Vacation Rentals Restaurants Things to do. North Highlands. Profile JOIN. Log in to get trip updates and message other travelers.

Many of the exhibits are hands-on, and visitors can turn cranks and watch the machines in motion. Others are for display only, but show the innovation of da Vinci.

In the case of the hang glider, da Vinci's design hangs next to a modern design, and the similarities are evident. Roxanne Yonn, director of the Aerospace Museum of California, said the exhibit provides a unique opportunity to learn about the way da Vinci designed machines to improve daily tasks, such as a crane and a water-powered saw, to those designed for warfare, such as a tank reminiscent of a turtle.

School groups and individual visitors alike will enjoy learning about the 14th-century inventions, and once they are done seeing the da Vinci exhibit, the rest of the displays in the Aerospace Museum await. Inside, multiple aircraft hang from the ceiling and are on display on the floor, and numerous engines are on stands showing the evolution of aircraft power from World War I to modern times. Informational placards along the walls highlight the history of aviation, with exhibits on the Tuskegee Airmen of World War II and women in flight being favorites.

Also on display are civilian aircraft, including a cargo plane, and several of the aircraft are open on a rotating schedule to allow visitors a closer look. Monday through Friday and 10 a.
