Dry Weight 3. The Tancook Whaler is one of those boats which evolved over many decades to do a particular working job, in this case to fish off the rough coast of Nova Scotia in all weathers and which at the same time took on a shape which to my eye is beauty itself They were fast and seaworthy and kept on moorings off the rocky coast all year round. If 1 ever get time to build one, this is my ultimate boat. This version has four berths, galley and wc and a rig which is designed for easy handling.

She is round bilge but easily built using the French Carvel method. Ply bulkheads and backbone from given shapes are set up and covered in stringers. Finally, the hull is covered with glass woven roving cloth in epoxy resin. Construction is ply bottom and sides with moulded ply round bilge. Originally conceived for the Yachting World design competition, this design uses the same water ballast tank system as the Highlander 18 making her kg. Her main ballast is a fixed ply box keel filled with iron scrap and concrete.

Instead of a single heavy lifting keel, she has a pair of bilge boards or alternatively a pair of bilge keels. Construction can be of ply or rough cheap timber for those who want a small, cheap live-aboard boat. She has room for two to sleep in the cockpit under a boom tent, double berth settee and large fore cabin for stowage.

The hull sides and bulwarks are then added oversize and trimmed later. The curvaceous bow is formed by 2 overlapping layers of ply for ease in construction. Stringers are then fitted into the framework to form chines and after as much internal fitting out has been done, the hull panels are applied.

The keel is retractable for easy recovery and launch and trailing. The example below is being built by Sam Watts. Dry Weight lbs kg Ballast lbs kg Maximum Headroom 6' 1. The Kari 4 follows in the tradition of her smaller sisters in having a hull with 4 planks per side. Her construction starts with the assembly of a plywood framework consisting of a ply fore and aft girder incorporating the centreboard case etc slotted together with ply frames and bulkheads.

Stringers are then fitted at the plank lands and the planking can either be put on lapped clinker fashion or as a multi-chine shape. The Kari 3 has been strip planked and there is no reason why the same cannot be done on the Kari 4.

The standard rig has a furling jib and high peaked gaff main but various other rigs could be used along with different keel arrangements—the standard steel centreplate allows a low draft but a fixed keel and inboard engine could be fitted. Kari 4 Particulars LOD 25'1" 7. Dry Weight lbs kg Ballast lbs kg Maximum Headroom 5'6" 1. Speed and cost were also important considerations and therefore strip plank construction with epoxy glues was chosen because no fiddly boat building is required and the mould for the hull actually becomes part of the hull structure and is not wasted and leaves a clean interior where maximum space can be used for the layout.

The plans include lines and offsets but the offsets are given for the ply frames and therefore you can set the boat up without lofting. LOD 10m Based upon the Pinky fishing boats of Maine and Nova Scotia this neat craft, instead of carrying the traditional cargo of sardines has been laid out with a roomy accommodation for 4 or 5 people in 2 separate compartments.

Her double ended hull and deep draft make her a very seaworthy craft. The gaff ketch rig is easily handled and the small self draining cockpit has been designed for ocean sailing. This design was one of our Professional series but is now under development for a client using the strip planked method of construction.

Full drawings and details are now available. Below - a proud day for Iain Tolhurst and myself! Her construction is of multi-chine ply extensively using pre-shaped ply bulkheads and girders. The forward accommodation is open plan with a large dining area which can convert to berths followed by a galley and chart area as the main working spaces in the centre of the boat.

The aft cabin has a double berth with plenty of stowage space and an engine can be fitted below the centre cockpit or outboards can be accommodated in a locker just in front of the transom. The position of the cockpit allows tiller or wheel steering and for additional protection there is space for a doghouse. LOD 26'3" 8. Fulmar 26'3" Particulars LOD 26'3" 8.

She had to be a safe and comfortable cruising yacht with cross channel capability as well as the ability to venture into shallow waters. The hull is of multi-chine shape and is assembled from pre-shaped ply components with fore and aft girders also acting as bunk fronts bilge board cases and locker fronts.

She has a large and deep cockpit aft and the cabin is laid out for 2 to live comfortably. The outboard is housed in an aft enclosed well. The junk rig may be supplemented with a reacher and all sail controls are led back to the cockpit.

The design has centre raised deckhouse which houses the galley and dinette with interior steering position. Forward of this is a double cabin and aft is a cockpit with exterior steering position followed by another double cabin giving up to 6 berths in total.

Details of machinery installation, sail, spar and deck plan are not as yet available but could be quickly drawn up. LOD 26'10" 8. Hart 27 Particulars LOD 26' 10" 8. For her length, she is to my mind the ultimate cruising vessel with the capability to cruise distant shores and then to travel up small rivers. The hull is modelled on the Pilot Cutter for it's seaworthiness and easily driven form. She is built using the clinker ply method over a rigid framework of pre-shaped ply bulkheads and girders.

She has twin bilge keels so that she can dry out along with a central ballast keel and centreplate for windward ability. Accommodation is comfortable with bunks for up to 6 crew, a large wc and spacious galley plus plenty of locker space. The engine is 35hp and she is able to have large tanks for extended cruising. This is a 4 plank per side ply on frame version of the well known North American Catboat—boats with a generous beam giving enormous stability and vast room inside for their length. She has the standard layout for a catboat of this length of just 2 berths with comfortably sized wc compartment and galley and very large cockpit.

She could of course, with some redesign, take 4 berths. The drawings give details for both an inboard diesel engine installation and an alternative outboard well. Many had a centreboard rather than a fixed keel and she could also be adapted to take this arrangement. To WL. The framework is made up of ply bulkheads edged with pine frames set up with ply bow and stern girders upside down on a strongback.

Chine stringers and hog are laminated in place before the framework is cleaned up ready to take the plywood skin. An outboard well is incorporated aft which the cockpit drains into. The dipping lug rig means that there is no standing rigging - the sail is not normally dipped these days but she could easily take other rigs. Accommodation is simple with 4 berths and space for a small galley and wc. Back to Yachts Main Page. We have compromised between the two ranges and gone for a simple construction using 2 chines.

This produces a boat with excellent interior space as well as having very good sailing characteristics along with ease in construction. Like the Simplicities, the construction is heavily based upon pre-shaped ply panels for the frames and girders which are slotted together and along with the bottom panel, form a stiff pre fabricated structure with no separate building frame and immediately ready to take the rest of the ply hull panels which are simply put on over size and trimmed later.

Chines are made up from square section unbevelled Douglas Fir with the bevel being taken up by an epoxy fillet cutting down on much of the normal boat building work. The rig is simple with the mast in a tabernacle and the centreboard is below the cabin sole so as not to encroach on the accommodation.
