He has a classic Mauser Model B that came from Africa along with him, the neighbor that is This gun was used by his best friend's granddad as an engineer for the British army, building roads and bridges in eastern Africa ala "The Ghost and the Darkness" and was used to feed the laborers as well as keep the lions off them. At any rate, a nice gun, with a lot of history to boot.

An article is slated to appear in a South African gun magazine in a few months about it. The stock was cracked due to age so a synthetic was put on it, with the original stock to be kept for display only. After much searching, only one company was found to be making these old style sights, and it was located in Germany. As chance would have it, I stumbled across an American machinist, who was making them by hand.

Rob Zimmerman makes each of these sights lovingly by hand, with a limited number being made about 6 sights every 6 months or so. This was shortly followed by a shocked and amazed look on his face as he recognized what that little part was. Fast forward a month or so, and my neighbor was in my garage asking as to when I might be able to mill out a spare cocking piece for the bolt to fit his sight. The cocking piece is harden steel, so it required some special tooling.

Specifically a solid carbide dove tail cutter that was. Fortunately, I had a. I have to say, I was a bit nervous with him standing over my shoulder as I cut the piece, but all went well. Having found a suitable shorter rear shaft firing pin, we then lapped the lugs on it to match the cocking piece.

Job done aside from drifting it into the cocking piece, which was done in short order. Yesterday, we had the chance to get out to the desert for some shooting, and the venerable 9.

Turns out, the Rigby peep sight ended up being about 1. The windage, by chance ended up being spot on. At any rate, it was a good day. My friend was happy, and I was quite proud at being able to help him out, and modify his rifle to a period correct state. In the future I'll have to rust blue the sight, but that's another post. Here's the sight, mounted on the cocking piece, with the shorter firing pin underneath.

Here's a view of the sight on the rifle, from the rear right side. And here is a picture of the sight from the right side Old Hickory 45 likes this. MarinePMI "Despite our ever-changing, ever-indignant world with its growing ignorance of and indifference to the ways of the wild, I remain a predator, pitying those who revel in artificiality and sythentic success while regarding me and my kind as relics of a time and place no longer valued or understood.

I stalk a real world of dark wood and tall grass stirred by a restless wind blowing across sunlit water and beneath star-strewn sky. And on those occasions when I choose to kill, I do so by choice, quickly, and with the learned efficiency of a skilled hunter. Posted 19 April - AM Purdy cool thing you done for your neighbor!! Nearly years later, these specifications remain true. Serial number appears on the front ring, bolt handle, bolt release, bolt shroud, safety and trigger. Properly modified for hunting, the follower was machined to permit the bolt to slide forward when the magazine is empty.

The Rigby rifle number is engraved on the trigger guard and stamped on the lower part of the action below the stock line. The action has not been drilled or tapped. Barrel new circa when restored is machined to original contour and incorporates the original island front sight, hook loop and island rear sight.

Barrel is 26 inches log. Today, in an echo of halcyon days before the Great War, we have resumed this arrangement with Mauser for our new range of Big Game rifles, making aspirational but affordable rifles for use around the world. In its plant in Isny, Mauser is again building its much-copied but never bettered original Magnum bolt action, which it originally created in specifically for John Rigby.

Today, just as was done a century ago, barrelled actions are supplied by Mauser, then assembled into superb hand-finished rifles by master craftsmen at the Rigby workshop in London.

Like the originals, these rifles carry London proof marks. Many aspects of the original rifle, including the much admired and copied extractor and the three-position flag safety, have been retained. These outstanding rifles have classic Rigby design features, plus a robust, ergonomic stock shape with a higher comb for better fit and absorption of recoil. They also feature plasma nitriding on all exposed metal surfaces for a tough but attractive anti-glare and rust-resistant finish.

The Rigby express sights have a single fixed V and two folding leaves sighted for 65, and yards dovetailed into the quarter-rib. With original pattern engraving, case-hardened recoil bars and a heat-blued extractor, these rifles represent exceptional value and are a benchmark in modern sporting firearms manufacturing. Available in. The Double Square Bridge model is available in.

With its lightweight inch barrel, this rifle is ideally suited for a telescopic sight. The horizontal Winchester-style safety catch accommodates a variety of scope-mounting systems on the machined action bridges. These are available in a selection of calibres, and can be upgraded and personalised as desired. Designed to be the perfect tool for the professional hunter, the PH boasts the classic lines and rock-solid engineering of the original Big Game rifle.

VonGruff, did you have the sear v-notched to aid shot-to-shot alignment? I too am planning on using one a home-built version for the Mauser project I'm doing, and I'm wondering if that step is totally necessary.

I'm aware that custom gun builders in the era when cocking piece sights were mildly popular did that trick. It was often done but I found that repeatable accuracy made it unnessary. I have a QD scope in my day pack should there be a shot long enough that I may be uncomfortable with the aperture.

Hasn't happened yet but am prepared. For hurried shots the target is obviously closer and if there is a little "bounce back" of on bolt closing, the difference in POI is so slight as to make no difference.

You may notice how low mine sits on the bolt head. Instead of dovetailing it to the cocking piece I had a sleave made with an off set so we could sit it as low as possible for a reasonable low sighting of the scope. It is set so that the straight bolt handle and the aperture with the stem down, just has clearance under the scope. Thanks VonGruff. I like the idea re: lowering the sight heighth. To be honest, I hadn't considered that.

Like you, the scope will be carried seperate from the gun method used with my current Mauser. I figure windage can be dealt with by moving the sight slightly in it's dovetail in addition to drifting the front sight. Big Sky Country.
