She has been appearing across the US bare-chested for three years as part of the topfreedom movement, which pushes for gender parity by challenging laws allowing men to be bare-chested in areas where women are not. Pictures of breastfeeding are now permitted but, in , female nipples on the site are still forbidden. The same rules do not apply to bare-chested men on the network.

There are a number of places in the US where women who expose their breasts in public are technically committing a crime. It is not illegal to be naked in public in England and Wales - unless the person is proven to have gotten naked in order to upset or shock others. But she was far from the first woman to exercise her legal right to walk with her breasts uncovered in public - Chelsea Covington has spent the last three years fighting to normalise women being bare-chested by appearing bare-chested in public, whether that be on the beach, in parks or while out walking.

The topfreedom movement is in itself a visual form of peaceful protest that works without slogans, signs or marches. Why did you decide that going bare chested in public would be the way to push for gender equality? The female breast has all of this context, and people associate the female breast with so many different things.

It can be a symbol of pride and shame, power and vulnerability, health and disease. The vast majority of passersby either ignore me or react positively. But walking bare-chested is still a powerful act for a woman, especially when done quietly, confidently and peacefully. I never yell or protest or carry signs. Anger is fear. I can see the undercurrent of that lingering prejudice sometimes in the facial expressions of people who see me, professionals, successful-looking people, people who I imagine would swear up and down they support gender equality, but then falter when faced with what that equality really means.

But I do go bare-chested a lot. Personal comfort is my guide. If I wish to do so, I do. I prefer the physical comfort bare-chestedness gives me, but also the feeling of freedom. Women have so many voices telling us we are ugly, lacking, shameful. As friends and family found out about my walks, they were incredibly curious and fascinated by my stories. They asked me to start a blog. Great, now.

Things began improving in Prior to that, police around the whole country were pretty aggressive and hostile. But so many women began taking on the challenge that the conversation has improved significantly. Two officials have even congratulated me on my success. I have learned so much about how law enforcement works, and how laws are created, interpreted and enforced. It can be pretty disheartening at times to see how entrenched stereotypes affect policing and lawmaking.

But I would really like to celebrate the Washington DC, Philadelphia and Pittsburgh police departments for being professional with me and this whole topfreedom learning curve.

Maryland police have not been so enlightened so far, which is strange because Maryland is actually crystal clear about guaranteeing gender equality from the state constitution all the way down to local ordinances.

Ponder that. In this day and age of ubiquitous vitriol, the conversation happening around my blog is actually quite mature. Not everyone gets it. There are unenlightened souls who say some profoundly unenlightened things like the gentleman who testified to the New Hampshire legislature that women need to be protected from equality , but I am quite pleased with how things are going.

Modesty - Wikipedia

A clothing rack held odd garments and hair extensions, a model sat having her makeup touched up, and others shuffled around in white robes. But when these eight models — a mix of cisgender women and trans performers of different races — walked out past a large scrim and drifted onto an island of white sand to pose near colorful steel sculptures, they moved extremely slowly, with no hint of a runway swagger. And they wore body paint in place of clothes: a blue bikini-like form here, a green chaps-like shape there.

The only tangible garments were see-through vinyl and molded-plastic pieces worn for warmth. She has installed nine of her Cubist-looking steel sculptures and a large photo-based canvas in the cavernous space, making it seem less imposing with scrims and bright lighting. The air is filled with a soundtrack of natural noises like fire and water and a pungent scent that smells like burned wood. Huanca, wearing a paint-splattered black jumper and some fierce-looking talon-shaped red nails.

Huanca said. They have the right to take breaks or leave whenever they want. Their names are on the walls. I want them to be collaborators. There are no men allowed, even among the security guards. She keeps it really safe for us. Huanca noted that no photography would be allowed at ground level and that security guards had been trained to follow each model.

After seeing a similar installation by Ms. Huanca at the Belvedere Museum in Vienna last year, she invited her to take over the Marciano project space for her first big museum show in the United States. Huanca grew up in Chicago with Bolivian immigrant parents: her father worked as a Berlitz language teacher, her mother as a travel agent.

She spent summers in Bolivia, until the family decamped to Houston when she was Before she painted skin, she liked to paint clothes. In Texas she discovered both an underground music scene, playing the drums in various bands, and contemporary art. She studied painting at the University of Houston, getting her B. Instead she bought thrift-store garments to cut up and turn into collages or rub with pigment. There, in , she dipped garments like a velvet dress and leather shorts into paint and hung them on the wall for a show at the Preteen Gallery.

A couple of years later, in Brooklyn, she began experimenting with painting directly on the skin of friends. Her biggest attention-getter came in at Art Basel, when her gallery, Peres Projects, presented her work in the Unlimited section, devoted to venturesome artists.

For an eight-day, eight-hours-a-day performance, she painted the skin of two nude models and set them adrift in her own sculptural installation.

At the time the artist was painting skin by hand, waking up around 5 a. For the Marciano show she is using machine sprayers, giving each model a set pattern and palette to be replicated through the show. Huanca likes to include natural materials like turmeric and coffee grounds in her canvases, body paintings and sculptures alike. For the hair extensions, she initially used horsehair but switched to synthetics a couple of years ago. Donna Huanca: Obsidian Ladder. Through Dec.
